Moisture regain is how much water a fibre takes up, as a percentage of its own weight, before it feels damp against skin. It is the single most useful fibre number in bedding and it almost never appears on a package.
The last row is where most category confusion lives. Plant-derived viscose absorbs more than cotton and releases it more slowly, because the manufacturing process converts a staple fibre into a smooth filament. High absorption without fast release is not moisture management, it is storage. The Federal Trade Commission requires textiles made through the viscose process to be labelled as rayon rather than by the name of the plant, precisely because the plant name implies a structure the finished fibre no longer has.
Why the room matters more than the season
Skin microclimate humidity, the relative humidity in the few millimetres between you and the fabric, sits comfortably between 40 and 60%. Above roughly 75 to 80% it becomes disruptive, and disruption at that level does not usually wake you fully. It produces the partial arousals that leave a night feeling unrestful without any memory of waking.
Materials with a moisture vapour transmission rate above 400 g/m2 per 24 hours hold the microclimate inside the comfortable band across a night. That is a property of fibre structure rather than of fibre origin, which is why staple fibres outperform filament ones regardless of what the filament was made from.
The practical version: if you wake warm and slightly damp rather than hot, the problem is vapour transmission and the fix is a staple fibre with a more open weave, not a thinner sheet.
Construction: the four things to establish
- Single-ply. Two thin yarns twisted together count as two threads and behave as one weaker one. Single-ply is stronger at a lower stated count and it is rarely on the label, so ask.
- Long-staple fibre. A staple length above 1.125 inches. Longer fibres mean fewer ends protruding from each yarn, which is what keeps a surface smooth as it ages rather than roughening.
- Finished dimensions after washing. Not cut dimensions. A brand that has measured shrinkage can tell you both.
- Retention. What physically holds the flat sheet and the fitted sheet in place, and what that mechanism does after fifty washes.
Deeper pockets are always better.
A pocket much deeper than the mattress leaves slack, and slack is what lets a corner ride up in the first place. The target is a pocket that clears the mattress by a small margin, then stays there. Depth without retention just relocates the problem.

The failure nobody prices in
