Fill and loft are different decisions
The industry sells inserts on a single axis. Lightweight, all season, extra warm. That axis conflates two properties that behave differently and fail differently, and the conflation is why the same insert gets reviewed as too hot by one sleeper and too thin by another.
Fill is a material property. It determines how much air the insert traps, how quickly it releases moisture, how it responds to body heat over the course of a night, and how it behaves after a year of compression. Loft is a quantity. It determines the weight and the drape, the sense of being under something.
A high-loft insert in a fill that manages moisture badly is a warm, damp insert. A low-loft insert in a fill that breathes well is a light, dry one. Those are four different outcomes from two variables, and a single lightweight-to-warm slider cannot express any of them.

Kapok is a plant fibre harvested from seed pods. Structurally it is a hollow tube, which is where its behaviour comes from: a great deal of trapped air for very little mass, and a surface that does not hold water the way a collapsed fibre does. It is the option for someone who wants the drape of down without an animal product, and for someone who sleeps warm and has found down heavy in a way they could not describe.

Fill power measures how many cubic inches one ounce of down occupies when allowed to expand. At 700 the down is well above the commodity grade sold in most department store inserts, and the practical consequence is an insert that feels lighter than its warmth suggests.
Down remains the reference for loft recovery. Compress it and it comes back. Nothing plant-based or synthetic matches it on that specific measure, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
Premium Down Alternative
The synthetic option, and the honest description is that it trades some breathability for washability and a lower price. If the insert is going on a guest bed, a child's bed, or any bed where it will be washed more often than a primary bed, that trade is usually correct. On a primary bed for a warm sleeper it is the weakest of the three.

The three lofts, in plain terms
Airy, Signature and Plush are quantities of the same fill in the same shell. Nothing about the material changes between them.
- Airy. The least fill. Choose it if you sleep warm, if your bedroom runs above the mid-sixties, or if you layer a quilt over the duvet in winter rather than swapping inserts.
- Signature. The middle. It is the right answer for most people in most bedrooms, and it is the one to pick when you are unsure, because the failure mode is mild in both directions.
- Plush. The most fill. Choose it if you sleep cold, if your bedroom runs below the low sixties in winter, or if you specifically want the weight rather than the warmth.
Notice that two of those three recommendations are about the room, not the person. Bedroom temperature is the single largest variable in whether an insert feels right, and it is the one almost never asked about at the point of sale.
A heavier insert is a warmer insert.
Heavier means more fill, and more fill usually means warmer, but the relationship is not linear and it is not the whole story. An insert that traps heat and holds humidity feels hotter than a heavier one that releases both. Weight is what you feel first. Moisture handling is what wakes you at three in the morning.
Baffle box, and why sewn through is a lower price for a reason
A duvet shell has to hold fill in place. There are two ways to do it. Sewn through stitches the top and bottom layers directly together, creating pockets. Baffle box sews a strip of fabric between the two layers, creating three-dimensional chambers with vertical walls.
The difference shows up in two places. First, at every sewn-through seam the fill is pinched to nothing, which is a cold line running across the insert. Baffle box maintains loft across the whole surface. Second, over time, sewn-through pockets let fill migrate along the stitch line more readily, which is the beginning of clumping.
Sewn through is cheaper to make. That is the entire reason it exists.
The part no fill chart covers
Every discussion above assumes the insert is where you put it. In practice, the most common complaint about a duvet is not that the fill was wrong. It is that the insert has slid to one end of the cover, bunched into a corner, or ended up sideways, and that the fix is to take the cover off and shake it back into place, repeatedly.
The industry answer is corner ties: four fabric loops on the insert, four ribbons in the cover, tied by hand. They work when tied and they come untied in the wash, and the retying is a task most people do once and then stop doing.

The failure mode column matters more than the strength column. In every attachment test the hardware failed before the fabric did, which is the correct order. A fastener stronger than the fabric it is sewn to tears the fabric, and a torn duvet cover is a replaced duvet cover.

Disconnect force exceeds connect force, which is the property you want. The system is easier to close than to open, so it does not release under the load of someone turning over, and it still comes apart by hand on laundry day.
Sizing, and the oversized question
Most duvet inserts are sized to the mattress. The result is an insert that measures correctly and looks thin on the bed, because a mattress is a rectangle and a person under a duvet is not: the fill has to travel up and over, and whatever it uses doing that is no longer available to hang at the sides.
An oversized insert adds that margin deliberately. The visual difference is the drape at the edge of the bed. The functional difference is that there is enough material to cover two people who move independently, which is the situation in most beds.
The trade is that an oversized insert needs an oversized cover, and mixing the two across brands rarely works. Buying the insert and cover as one system is not a marketing preference here, it is the only way the sizing is guaranteed to agree.

You need one insert matched to your bedroom and a layer you can add. Swapping inserts seasonally is storage, expense and a second purchase to solve a problem a quilt over the top solves for less. Clumping means the insert is worn out.

- Use a cover, always. The cover is the washable part. An insert washed as often as a cover will not last, whatever it is filled with.
- Shake it out weekly. Thirty seconds redistributes fill before migration becomes settled.
- Dry it fully. Residual moisture in fill is what turns a good insert into a heavy one. If it goes in a dryer, it comes out completely dry or it goes back in.
- Store it uncompressed. Vacuum bags are the fastest way to permanently reduce loft in any fill, and down recovers from them better than the alternatives, which is not the same as recovering fully.
